This track is the opener from the album Flies The Fields. I met guitarist and vocalist Jeff Mueller when my friends and I put on one of his other bands, the excellent June of 44, in Dundee in 1998. They were a big influence on Laeto, especially in terms of the way we sounded. We even took their records into the studio when we recorded our first album Make Us Mild so the engineer knew the kinds of sounds we were after. For this compilation Jeff generously offered any track from either band’s back catalogue. I chose a song by The Shipping News because their bass player, Jason Noble (also a member of influential bands Rodan and Rachel’s), sadly died last year from a rare form of cancer.
In 2010 The Shipping News released the album One Less Heartless To Fear, the proceeds of which continue to go towards supporting Jason's surviving family. I would encourage you, the discerning listener, to buy a copy of that fine record at the first convenient opportunity.
